Senate Dems to discuss canceling July 4 break (AP)

WASHINGTON – A spokesman says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid intends to talk to members of the Democratic rank and file about possibly canceling a scheduled July 4 break so work can continue on a deal to cut deficits and raise the debt limit.

Jon Summers made the comment as Reid and members of the leadership were at a White House meeting with President Barack Obama.

He emphasized that no decision had been made.

Obama said at a news conference earlier in the day that unless there is progress on negotiations toward a deal by week's end, it may be time for lawmakers to start spending more time in Washington.

The administration says the debt limit must be raised by Aug. 2 to avert a default and damage to the economy.
