Lawmakers make another run at immigration bill (AP)

WASHINGTON – Senate Democrats renewed an uphill push Tuesday for legislation that would give young illegal immigrants a shot at legal status by arguing that the hundreds of thousands affected would improve the nation's economy and security.

The legislation known as the DREAM Act would allow students who came to the United States as children to gain permanent residency if they go to college or serve in the military, plus meet other conditions such as passing a criminal background check. The bill's sponsors are unlikely to gain the votes necessary to pass it, but the hearing gave lawmakers a chance to show Hispanics and other immigrant communities their support for the legislation before next year's elections.

Several dozen students in their cap and gowns attended the hearing, despite their status as illegal immigrants. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., introduced several who had demonstrated excellence in many facets of life but were unable to gain employment in their chosen field.

"They want to serve the country they love," Durbin said. "All they want is a chance."

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said that lawmakers from both parties have compassion for the students that would be helped by the legislation, but he said it was important to get the details right, and he pointed to changes that he believes are necessary for the bill before it can gain more Republican support. For example, he noted that students could eventually gain citizenship even if they committed serious misdemeanors, such as driving while intoxicated or certain drug offenses. The biggest stumbling block, he said, was the federal government's failure to do what it has promised to do in securing the borders and enforcing illegal hiring practices in the workplace.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., countered that the nation's borders are the most secure they've been over the past decade and that there are no longer thousands of illegal immigrants coming across the Mexican border on a daily basis.

"To use border security as a reason not to give these young people a chance makes no sense to me," Feinstein said.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan told the Senate subcommittee hearing that the students helped would help fill millions of science and engineering jobs that are critical to sustaining the economy.

"They can be the fuel to our economic engine," Duncan said.

Janet Napolitano, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, argued that the students who would be helped through the legislation pose no threat to public safety or the nation's security. Indeed, granting them legal status would help the department devote more of its resources to removing those who are a threat.

Alcee Hastings Sexual Harassment Charge Another Distraction for Congress (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | If the House Democrats thought they were finally out of the woods with the resignation of Anthony Weiner, it appears they have thought wrong. The latest congressman to be involved in a sex scandal is Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Hastings is being investigated by the Office of Congressional Ethics for allegedly sexually harassing a member of his staff. The staffer in question, Winsome Parker, worked for the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, a Cold War era entity that Hastings heads. Parker alleges instances of sexual harassment, usually involving inappropriate remarks, lasting just more than two years. She further alleges the congressman retaliated against her when she tried to report the matter. A lawyer for Rep. Hastings denies the allegations.

It is unknown whether the investigation will be referred to the House Ethics Committee. If that happens, one can only think that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is not going to be happy. Her forlorn hope of ever becoming Speaker of the House again will just get all that more forlorn. Getting her caucus snake bit with another sordid scandal is something she does not need right at the moment. The is especially true as she needs to begin accusing Republicans of wanting to kill old people again and not have to explain why her members have impulse control issues.

Hastings actually came to Congress with an ethical cloud hanging over him, having been removed from the bench for conspiring to take a bribe. The jury, however, failed to convict him on that charge.

To be sure, what Hastings is accused of seems positively decorous compared to what Weiner did. But ever since Clarence Thomas, lewd behavior toward a subordinate has become quite unacceptable. This is true in the corporate world as well as in politics.

The Hastings matter has not yet risen to the level in which it has caused calls for resignation, daily coverage in the media, and become the subject of jokes by late night comedians. It could be that the matter will be dealt with quietly, either with Hastings being absolved, or with him being found guilty and having some kind of sanction imposed on him that would be less than having to resign from the Congress. Nancy Pelosi should hope that will be the case. Otherwise she has another distraction on her hands.

DNC releases another video attacking Romney on bailout position (Daily Caller)

The Democratic National Committee has a game plan and it’s sticking to it: run over Mitt Romney, reverse, and do it again.

In yet another video, the DNC attacks the 2012 Republican frontrunner for his statements objecting to the government bailouts of the auto industry.

The former Massachusetts governor has been the subject of numerous drive-bys from Democrats ever since his New York Times Op-ed “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt,” which sounds particularly cold when repeated over and over — as it is in the newest video.

WATCH:

As a video produced by DNCs “RapidDemReponse” team who are looking ahead to the actual 2012 race and seem to expect Romney to be the main competition.

A recent Fox News poll has Romney at the top of the Republican pile with 23 percent, ahead of  his closest competition, the non-candidate Rudy Giuliani, by 10 points. In a race against Obama, Romney also fares best, down just six points from the president, according to an average compiled by Real Clear Politics. Though still early in the season, runner-up Tim Pawlenty loses to Obama by about 14 points.
